How the Scotland Income Tax Calculator Works
This Scotland Income Tax Calculator estimates your Income Tax liability based on the Scottish tax rates and bands for the selected tax year. It takes into account your annual gross income, other taxable income, pension contributions, and your Personal Allowance. The calculator applies progressive Scottish Income Tax bands to your taxable income to provide an estimate of your Scottish Income Tax.
Scottish Income Tax Rates and Bands
Scottish Income Tax rates are different from the rest of the UK. For the tax year 2026-27, the Scottish tax bands are:
- Starter Rate: 19% on income from £12,571 to £16,537
- Basic Rate: 20% on income from £16,538 to £29,526
- Intermediate Rate: 21% on income from £29,527 to £43,662
- Higher Rate: 42% on income from £43,663 to £75,000
- Advanced Rate: 45% on income from £75,001 to £125,140
- Top Rate: 48% on income over £125,140
Your taxable income is calculated after applying your Personal Allowance and any pension contributions.
How Scottish Income Tax Is Calculated
The calculation follows a progressive band system. Only the portion of your taxable income that falls into each band is taxed at that band's rate. For example, if your taxable income is £40,000, the first £16,537 is taxed at 19%, the next £12,989 is taxed at 20%, and the remaining £10,474 is taxed at 21%.
Who Pays Scottish Income Tax?
If you live in Scotland, you pay Scottish Income Tax on your non-savings and non-dividend income. Your Scottish taxpayer status is usually determined by your main place of residence. This calculator is designed specifically for Scottish taxpayers.
For more general UK tax calculations, you can use the UK Tax Calculator.
Scottish Income Tax vs UK Income Tax
The main difference between Scottish Income Tax and the rest of the UK is that Scotland sets its own rates and bands. This means that for the same level of income, Scottish taxpayers may pay more or less Income Tax than taxpayers elsewhere in the UK.
Does Scotland Have Different Income Tax Rates?
Yes. Scotland has its own Income Tax rates which were introduced in 2017. The Scottish Parliament has the power to set rates and thresholds for non-savings and non-dividend income.
Is National Insurance Included?
No. National Insurance is separate from Income Tax and is not included in this Scottish Income Tax estimate. If you want to estimate your National Insurance contributions, please use the UK Tax and NI Calculator.
What Happens If Your Income Is High?
If your income exceeds £100,000, your Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above that threshold. This calculator automatically applies this taper. For incomes above £125,140, the Personal Allowance is reduced to zero.
Important Limitations of This Calculator
This calculator provides an estimate only. It is not an official HMRC tool. The actual tax you pay may differ due to:
- Individual circumstances such as marriage allowance, blind person's allowance, or other tax reliefs
- Income from savings and dividends (which are taxed differently)
- Changes in tax rules and thresholds
- Specific professional advice may be needed for complex tax situations
