How the UK Income Tax Calculator Works

This calculator estimates your UK Income Tax based on your annual income, tax year, and nation. It applies your Personal Allowance first, then taxes the remaining income progressively across the relevant tax bands.

Understanding UK Income Tax Bands

UK Income Tax is progressive. This means you pay different rates on different portions of your income. For 2026/27, the standard Personal Allowance is £12,570 – you pay no tax on income up to this amount. The basic rate of 20% applies to the next £37,700 of taxable income, the higher rate of 40% applies to income between £50,270 and £125,140, and the additional rate of 45% applies to income above £125,140.

What Is the Personal Allowance?

The Personal Allowance is the amount of income you can earn each year before you start paying Income Tax. For 2026/27, the standard Personal Allowance is £12,570. If your income exceeds £100,000, your Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above that threshold. The calculator applies this taper automatically.

What Are the UK Income Tax Rates?

For England, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2026/27, the rates are: 20% (basic rate), 40% (higher rate) and 45% (additional rate). The thresholds are based on your taxable income after the Personal Allowance.

What Are the Scottish Income Tax Rates?

Scotland has its own Income Tax rates: 19% (Starter), 20% (Basic), 21% (Intermediate), 42% (Higher), 45% (Advanced) and 48% (Top). The calculator automatically applies the correct Scottish rates when Scotland is selected.

How Much Income Tax Do I Pay?

The amount of Income Tax you pay depends on your income, tax year, nation, Personal Allowance, and which tax bands your income falls into. Use this calculator to get an estimate for your situation.

Effective vs Marginal Tax Rate

Effective tax rate is the total Income Tax you pay divided by your total income. Marginal tax rate is the rate you pay on the next pound of taxable income. Your marginal rate is often much higher than your effective rate because only the portion of your income in the highest band is taxed at that rate.
